Fertilising the Future: Using Green Hydrogen Value Chains to Address the Climate-Food-Security Nexus

Event Information

Join us for a discussion, where we delve into the potential of green hydrogen to revolutionise nitrogen fertiliser production, providing a sustainable and clean alternative for fossil fertiliser manufacturing. By embracing green hydrogen-derived nitrogen fertiliser, we can cut emissions from the agricultural sector, boost global food security, and accelerate the ramp-up of green hydrogen value chains in countries and regions with high potential for renewable energies, especially in Africa and Latin America.

The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has exposed the interconnectedness between energy transition, food security, and global stability. In 2022, rising gas prices have resulted in plummeting application rates for nitrogen fertiliser particularly across the African continent as well as parts of Latin America and Southeast Asia. As a result, agricultural yields have declined, further aggravating food insecurity and hunger. Promoting the production of green nitrogen fertiliser from renewable energy sources, combined with measures for sustainable application and soil health management, has the potential to boost agricultural productivity, thus reducing dependence on food and fertiliser import, while promoting green hydrogen value chains.

Building international public private partnerships and promoting technology and knowledge transfer to harness the power of green hydrogen is a strategic step towards transforming our agriculture and food systems towards more sustainability and resilience. The pressing need to integrate efforts in energy transition, food security, and geopolitical stability is undeniable.

The panel discussion brings together stakeholders from the public and private sectors, policy, finance and industry to explore joint action and international cooperation for a more secure, sustainable, and resilient future.
