Scaling Carbon Markets for Net Zero - How international carbon markets can unlock the next wave of global climate investment
The next decade will be decisive for delivering global climate targets. While domestic emission reductions remain the cornerstone of climate action, achieving net zero at reasonable cost will also require large-scale investments beyond national borders. International carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement can mobilize private capital, accelerate mitigation projects worldwide and help bridge the growing gap between climate ambition and implementation.
A key question is how to create sufficient supply before demand surges. As major compliance carbon markets increasingly explore the use of high-integrity international credits, including potential future demand from systems such as the EU ETS, project developers, host countries and investors need clear market signals today. Yet many Article 6 activities remain stuck in pilot phases, facing regulatory uncertainty, limited liquidity and insufficient demand visibility.
The session will open with an industry keynote on the strategic role of international carbon markets in achieving global climate goals while strengthening competitiveness and affordability. Building on this impulse, representatives from business, governments and international organizations will discuss how to scale supply, establish robust market frameworks and ensure that international carbon markets are ready to meet future compliance demand while maintaining environmental integrity and trust.
