A New Chapter for Climate-Resilient Landscapes in Central Asia: Launching CLiCA at COP31

17:30 – 18:00(Istanbul, UTC+3)

Central Asia is on the frontline of climate change. Rising temperatures, melting glaciers, water stress and frequent droughts threaten ecosystems, agriculture and rural livelihoods. Addressing these challenges requires ambitious action, regional cooperation and investment.

Building on BMZ-financed initiatives in the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, the recently approved Climate-resilient Landscapes in Central Asia (CLiCA) programme will scale up climate action. Implemented by GIZ and national partners, it combines locally led action with stronger frameworks for climate-resilient, low-emission land use and sustainable livelihoods.

Over seven years, CLiCA will mobilise approximately EUR 264.4 million from BMZ, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and, potentially at a later stage, the European Investment Bank (EIB). It aims to strengthen the resilience of more than one million people, improve the management and restoration of nearly one million hectares, and reduce emissions by 6.95 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. CLiCA is part of the German Government’s Green Central Asia Initiative and contributes to the Team Europe Initiative on water, climate change and energy in Central Asia.
