Walk-In Session: NegotiateCOP

How can Artificial Intelligence (AI) help negotiators navigate the complexity of global climate diplomacy?

12:00 – 12:30(Istanbul, GMT+3)

How can artificial intelligence (AI) help negotiators navigate the complexities of global climate diplomacy?

In this interactive walk-in-session, Johannes Jacob and Robin Nowok, part of the German delegation, will introduce the latest version of “NegotiateCOP” – an AI-powered tool designed to assist users in navigating the immense and often fragmented landscape of UNFCCC submissions and decision texts.

NegotiateCOP covers an extensive collection of official UNFCCC data, including more than 8,000 submissions from the Parties and over 950 decisions from the COP, CMP, and CMA. The tool makes this large and complex body of negotiation documents easier to search, explore and compare, helping users identify country positions and potential thematic alignments.

NegotiateCOP is a joint initiative of the Data Labs of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN), and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), developed in close collaboration with negotiators from the Global South.

Following its launch at COP30, the team gathered extensive feedback from users and developed new concepts in dedicated user workshops. Based on this feedback, the updated version for COP31 offers new features as well as improved overall performance and usability.

The event is designed to be hands-on, allowing participants to explore NegotiateCOP on their own, test its features, search for and compare negotiation documents, and discover countries’ positions and thematic alignments. Johannes and Robin will be available throughout the event to demonstrate features, answer questions, and discuss how AI could support more equitable, transparent, and inclusive climate negotiations.
