Biography

Dr. Stefan M. Buettner is Director Global Strategy & Impact at the Institute for Energy Efficiency in Production (EEP) and chairs the UN ECE Task Force on Industrial Energy Efficiency, as well as the UN ECE Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency. As initiator of the Energy Efficiency Barometer of Industry (#EEBarometer) and former project lead of the Energy Efficiency Index of German Industry (#EEIndex), he facilitates demand-side informed efficiency action.

He also coordinates the joint activities of EEP and the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA to decarbonise industry. Mr. Buettner is working on multinational committees, such as the Energy Efficiency Financial Institutions Group (EEFIG), the EU Covenant of Companies for Climate and Energy (CCCE), the UN ECE Committee on Sustainable Energy, the UN ECE Task Force on Carbon Neutrality and as former coordinator of the G20 Energy Efficiency Task Groups on Industry and Finance on 'strategies to unleash energy productivity and decarbonisation potentials of industry'. In these, he has delivered over 175 speeches in 35+ countries, and numerous publications, including his dissertation.

Dr. Buettner has further expertise in low carbon innovation, smart cities, islands and mobility, as well as in energy productivity strategies through his work as Associate of the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation (ECCI, Edinburgh/Scotland), a former member of the Scottish Sustainable Energy for All Platform and as Senior Parliamentary Advisor at the Scottish Parliament. He was International Advisor and Co-Author of the US Energy Strategy “Energy 2030” and a member of the International Steering Committee of the Energy Efficiency Global Forum (EE Global). He studied International Economics in Tübingen, Germany and Boston, United States.
