Biography

Julia Pongratz is Professor for Physical Geography and Land Use Systems and director of the Department of Geography of the University of Munich (LMU), Germany. Her research focuses on the influence of humans on the Earth system through land use. She is the spokesperson of the German research program on CO2 removal CDRterra and currently engaged in a variety of research projects investigating sustainable pathways for climate neutrality, such as ForestNavigator, RESCUE (Response of the Earth System to overshoot, Climate neUtrality and negative Emissions), CDRSynTra: Carbon Dioxide Removal Synthesis and Transfer project, and STEPSEC: Comparative evaluation of the potential of terrestrial carbon dioxide removal. She is part of the core team for the annual Global Carbon Project and contributor to the IPCC’s Assessment Reports.
